Retriever Vests

I have heard mention that purchasing a vest with floats in them are a bad idea.

Is this true? If so what are the reasons?

I hunt on the Columbia River and It can get nasty at times. Plus very cold.

Any help would be apreciated.

I use the Hodgeman and it works great. The floatation is removable for when you are hunting in the field. I have gotten to the point where I do not take it out any more.
