Nixon was also the President who introduced negative income tax (aka tax credits that could exceed total taxes owed) and opened the doors to China. If only he hadn't been a paranoid crook deeply caught up in Vietnam, he might have been one of our best Presidents.

Seems to me he must have been a communist. As has been mentioned, he opened the door to communist China and proposed health care reform, but he also created the Environmental Protection Agency and signed laws like the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Not the kind of actions I would expect from a Republican these days. Of course it can't be the party that has changed. They are still the party of Lincoln!

I saw a documentary entitled "Goldwater on Goldwater" a while back. Made if I recall correctly by his granddaughter. Barry Goldwater AKA "Mr. Conservative" would be on regarded today as too liberal compared to today's Republican mainstream. The party has moved very much to the right. About the same time period I listen to Newt Gingrich talking about how the Republican party would be in trouble in the coming years if they couldn't find a way to relate to mainstream America. That the strategies that got them elected in the past, such as focusing on the Christian Right as their power base. Wasn't going to work in the future with changing demographics.

Read John Dean's "Conservatives without Conscience." It is a book that Barry Goldwater planned to write with Dean, but he unfortunately died. So Dean went on and wrote it based upon discussions they had. Your assertion is exactly the argument that he made.
