Hello . . .
Has anyone out there used something other than .22 blanks, 209 primers or shotgun poppers for training purposes?
I'm wondering if .38 blanks in a revolver would work OK with starting a dog, or would the report be too loud to begin training with.
THANKS for any help you can provide!! ;)
What I started out with was a cap pistol and than cut 2 2x4 so they could fit in my hand and bang those together. I did that until I could get a blank pistol.

That would be way too loud for starting out. Even .209 primers get dogs' attention from 400 yards away. You can get a .209 pistol for about $70. I have the model below. It's not great but it fires reliably and that's all I really need.

With .209 primers only being about $4.50 per 100, being able to use them will pay for the pistol pretty quickly since .38 blanks run about $35-$40.00 per 100.

I've used a 32cal blank gun. Very expensive to shoot. About $.50 a round, I believe.
