ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A North Carolina congressman said he'll carry a gun when he attends public events in his district's mountain communities after last weekend's assassination attempt on one of his colleagues.
U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler tells WLOS-TV he'll pack heat for self-protection after the shooting of fellow Democrat Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona.
The Waynesville lawmaker said he's carried a concealed weapon periodically since someone made a serious threat on his life in 2009.
But Shuler said he'll now make it a practice to carry the permitted handgun when he is away from Capitol Hill, where lawmakers rely on Capitol Police for security.
Shuler said his staff members have also gone through the training and background checks needed for the legal permit to carry concealed handguns.

A nice change from most of the dems gun attitudes.:D

I'm a gun owner. I support the right to bear arms. But if a large portion of people in that Safeway parking lot had been 'packing heat', what might have happened? You hear gunshots...you look around...there's not one guy with a piece in his hand...but six. Who do you shoot? The guy nearest you? The bad guys don't always wear red sashs. The good guys aren't always somebody you know. Hello, OK corral! Hell, we shoot the wrong people sometimes in combat. Oh well...friendly fire, collateral damage...WTF.
I don't have the answer. Do you? I know I've seen plenty of straw buyers at gun shows. Is there a way to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them? How?
Maybe open carry everywhere, everyplace. "He gave me a 'mad dog' look, so I shot him."
Yeah, that'll work....JD

Heath Shuler couldnt hit a wide open receiver when he was an NFL QB, what makes him think he will do any better with a gun..

I bet more Congresspersons will be surrounded by armed security full time

And they'll probably contract with Blackwater, or whatever they call themselves these days. JD
