The Open started with a triple with two retired. The line overlooked an oblong pond that was on line to the two retired marks and there was water in the shape of a Y lying on its side in front of the two retired marks. The left bird was thrown first, left to right across the channel formed by the left branch of the Y. The middle bird went down second thrown from right to left and landing just to the right hand shore of the channel formed by the right branch of the Y. The flyer was way over to the right thrown right to left and landing either on a road or just behind or in front of it with some small mounds enroute and in the area. The flyer was quite short and the two retired marks were fairly similar in distance.
The dogs tended to flare the left edge of the pond in front on the way to the left mark and many backsided the holding blind and entered the water way beyond the holding blind and the mark or ran all the way around the water to get it. Many dogs squared the two pieces of water enroute to the middle mark which placed them well behind the holding blind resulting in a big hunt. Very few dogs took nice angles through the water and went straight to that middle bird.
The land blind had at least three pieces of swimming water to angle and then up the side of a dike. There was a crosswind from right to left and about half way through the land blind, it started raining steadily with occasional wind gusts. The initial line to the blind was influenced by a bush right on line to the blind so the dogs either dropped into the small pond to the left of it or another pond to the right. Most had to have a quick whistle to get them back on line.
There were 36 called back from the first series and 26 called back to the 3rd series as follows:
1, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 16, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 35, 37, 38, 39, 46, 49, 53, 55, 56, 58, 59
The Qual finished today but I have only the first two placings:
1st - Ben - o/h Julie Zuhlke
2nd - Moto - o: Tony Crouch, h: Brooke Van De Brake
