Obama Skips Tornado Destruction, Heads West to Raise Moneyby Keith Koffler on April 20, 2011, 11:44 am

President Obama is opting not to visit the tornado-ravaged areas of the South, choosing instead to embark today on a three day tour out West where he will try to boost his political standing by talking up his approach to the deficit and raise millions for himself and fellow Democrats.

The tornadoes, part of a storm that rampaged though six states Saturday, resulted in one of the worst disasters of any kind in the United States since the Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Scores were left injured or homeless while 45 people were killed – about four times as many as died in the Gulf oil rig explosion and the subsequent oil spill last year. In North Carolina alone, there were nearly two-dozen storm-related deaths Saturday, with 130 homes destroyed and an estimated 700 more damaged.

Not only is Obama staying away from the region, he has said almost nothing publicly about the tragedy beyond an interview with a North Carolina TV station and a very brief mention at a White House prayer breakfast. The president has failed to make the kind of national, attention-getting public statement presidents offer during crises to comfort victims by expressing the condolences of the nation and to seek charitable aid.

Sunday, he went golfing. On Monday, he did sign a disaster declaration for North Carolina, which will free up federal assistance to the state.

Vice President Biden has also failed to show up. He’s cooling his heels today at home in Wilmington, Delaware. The disaster did not even merit a visit from Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar who – without any apparent irony – was in Boston Tuesday announcing a new wind energy project.

Meanwhile, the South is bracing for more, as forecasters say severe storms and tornadoes could hit the region again today.

Obama’s failure to publicly attend to the fallout from the tornadoes comes on the one-year anniversary of the rig explosion that caused the Gulf oil spill. Obama was roundly criticized then for failing to respond sufficiently to the crisis.

The president’s silence and absence during the current crisis is particularly odd given his political stakes in North Carolina, which barely went for Obama over McCain in 2008. Obama is so desperate to hold the state that he’s chosen to hold the 2012 Democratic convention there, in Charlotte.

Obama’s first stop out West will be in San Francisco today, where he will stage two fundraisers and host a “town hall” style meeting at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto focusing on his solution for the federal deficit. On Thursday, he’ll hopscotch over to Reno, Nevada – also a key presidential battleground state – for another deficit town hall, and then head back to California to rake in more money.

While the fundraisers are obviously political events, Obama’s public sales job for his deficit plan also has a major political component, given the widespread public concern about the economy is behind his perilously low poll ratings

Why should NC be any different than Nashville was when it had the floods?

Heck, I was just reading that the whole state of Texas is on fire!

I guess Obama knows he won't carry any of those states so he will concentrate on the ones he has a chance with.

Can you say, "Campaign Mode";-)

Damn near! Winds died a little and changed direction which should help. Gov. Perry has asked for Federal disaster assistance. Hope he has better results than getting a space shuttle for Houston.

Isn't that the truth...

Ok, he doesn't need to come and hold your hand... How many tonadoes, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, happen every year?

You want your nanny to come? Every F**kin' time?

Suck it up. Man up. It was a storm...

It'll happen again.

Sorry you guys are hurtin'.

Really though. Is the government supposed to come and make it all alright for ya?

I thought we were rugged individualists...able to take care of us and our own.

So Obama didn't visit. Boo-Hoo.

If the POTUS visited every scene of natural disaster, that would be all he did.

The job given him, by those that elected him, was to protect us from enemies, foreign and domestic. Tornadoes do not fall into that discription.

Fixed it for you. No thanks needed :-)

Seriously, he could have said "sorry for the loss of lives".

I don't know if he did or didn't. Do you, seriously?

I'll tread lightly with my asterisks for you....OK? I sure hope you don't have PP bookmarked, where the kids can login in your absence? Do you?
In lieu of that, I'm sure that the 'mods' will smack me down in the AM.

I can't swear that he didn't. It was not on my OK T.V. chanels that we watch if he did. Usually if he talked about OK it would be carried on our news.

Grandchildren are probably all smart enough to check on what Grandma has been reading ( if they care, which I doubt ). I don't have it bookmarked however. They use the computer when they are here. And both sons are in the computer field so their children know a good bit about it. I would bet my granchildren hear worse than your word everyday of their lives at school or at work though. Just decided to kid you a bit. I'm in a really good, light hearted mood tonight.

I thought the Westside Babtist Church were a bunch of biggoted idiots. They vast majority of the people in this country both liberal and conservative have been willing to help their fellow man of any nationality and I don't mean by government action alone. They devote their time and money to help those who NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, can't help themselves.

I have cited on this forum, times when people I know have done just this, some liberal and some conservative.

Sadly, these types of actions are not publicised very often. I love people to tell of such charity, ESPECIALLY when they are the ones who perform it. It let't me feel that I know the person better and usually results in a more accurate picture of the person.

I tell you what. YOU cite instances of people you know personally who have donated time and money to help their fellow man who find themselves in such circumstances. Don't leave yourself out. I assure you noone will feel you are bragging, only showing you are one of the vast majority.

As far as I'm concerned, PBO should stay away.
What does a Prez visit really do besides disrupt/divert resources away from the jobs that need to/should be doing, just for a photo op?
What's he gonna do, roll up his sleeves and hold a shovel for 30 secs? His "perfectly sculpted pecs" wouldn't pick up debris or anything. That's NOT what the CommOrg in Chief does!
And heaven forbid MO might get her designer jeans dirty or break a nail! "Let's Move" does not include handing out drinking water or blankets at a shelter.

They'd do better by sending the WH/NPS garden workers out there to help.
At least those folks know what a shovel & a backhoe are for!

Yea but
if the tornado hit in samalia or iran he would be sending aid in a heart beat.

He cannot hide his true colors. he may be black but his true colors are BLACK ( absence of light) and yellow

NO, we don't want him to come and hold our hands unlike the Animals in NO after Katrina. Well maybe those in Raleigh would.
Tornados are not unusual in NC. But tornados of that magnitude are.
We normally get EF0's and EF1"s. We do not get the biggies.
WE had one come thru our subdivision 2 years ago. NO 911 calls. The tornado went thru around 6 pm. By dark the guys had not only opened all the roads in the sub they also opened one lane of the main road, had all the trees off of houses and roofs tarped.
24 people died in NC.
