Callbacks to the 4th series of the Derby (21 dogs):

The Open started with a triple with two retired. The marks were in a dry lake bed with dikes in a maze and lots of brush and trees. The first bird down was the shortest in the middle thrown left to right from one side of a dike to the base of a tree on the other side. The gunner retired down toward the base of the dike. The long second bird was shot and thrown by two gunners. It was on the right and thrown right to left across a corner of a dike. Those gunners also retired. The flyer was fairly long on the left and sort of went which ever way it wanted to go. Most of the ones I saw seemed to fall directly behind the two flyer gunners. The flyer crates were hidden and the gunners retired after the flyer was picked up, leaving no visible gunners in the field. The breeze, when it came up, helped the dogs on the two retired marks if they went downwind. When the breeze wasn't there, the marks were harder to find.
The dogs I saw took a variety of routes to the flyer and then went to the area of the short retired, hunting around the tree. I heard that some dogs missed that short bird upwind and either ended up going long or going back to the flyer. The direct line to the long bird on the right was through the point of a row of thick cover. Some dogs came through the cover and ended up hunting short. Some skirted the cover and headed off to no man's land between the short bird and the long bird. Some were not able to recover and had to be handled, picked up, or helped by the gunners. There was an honor following the marks. Right behind the line was a canal which the dogs could take a dip in before or after running which was a good thing since it was quite warm.

Open Callbacks to 3rd Series (26 dogs):
1, 3, 5, 17, 18, 26, 27, 29, 30, 32, 34, 35, 42, 46, 47, 48, 50, 53, 56, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69. Number 65 was not noted last night as being called back from the 1st series, but apparently was added back in.

The Amateur started with a triple with two retired run from a mound. First down was the medium distance bird on the right thrown from a mound from left to right onto the flat. The gunner retired behind a holding blind behind the mound. The line to this bird was through two pieces of water. The long bird in the middle went down second. It was thrown from right to left and the gunner retired behind a brushed up holding blind. The line to this bird went over the righthand corner of a mound. The flyer was on the left shot left to right from a mound down onto the flat.
I watched the early dogs and, on the right hand mark, they tended to be pushed to the left and toward the gunner rather than the mark because they skirted the end of the second piece of water. On the long mark, they were thrown offline by the mound either going to the left of the mound rather than to the right of it or overcorrecting coming off the mound and ending up on the wrong side of the holding blind. But most dogs came up with the birds one way or the other.

The Open water blind involved several water entries including one off a scented point. Callbacks to the 4th series in the morning (17 dogs):
