Not sure if he should be doing for drug addicts and alcoholics. I forget did they lower them for Ted Kennedy?

They'll also lower it if you're a long time college football coach. At least here in Pennsylvania.

I suspect that there are some actual guidelines somewhere.

In my opinion, the flag should be flown at half mast in HONOR of those who served her well.

Unless one has done something for the country as a whole, like a MOH recipient, only state flags should go 1/2 mast. JMO

On the other hand, this gov has been mentioned as POTUS material, do you want him taking the call at 3 AM? I certainly don't, this instance indicates a lack of judgment. Again, JMO :).

Bingo ! All those fine people who died for this country are neglected but we worship some entertainer. Values are skewed in this country.

Flying the Flag at Half-Staff

The Flag Code sets out detailed instructions on flying the flag at half-staff on Memorial Day and as a mark of respect to the memory of certain recently deceased public officials.33 This section embodies the substance of Presidential Proclamation No. 3044,34 entitled “Display of Flag at Half-Staff Upon Death of Certain Officials and Former Officials.” The section provides that the President shall order the flag flown at half-staff for stipulated periods “upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a state, territory, or possession.” After the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag may be flown at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or in accordance with recognized custom not inconsistent with law. In addition, the Governor of a state, territory, or possession, or the Mayor

CRS-11 35 In 2007, P.L. 110-41, added the Mayor of the District of Columbia to this provision and authorized the Governors and the Mayor to issue proclamations to lower the flag to half- staff in honor of members of the Armed Forces from their jurisdiction.

36

34 Op. Atty. Gen. 483. of the District of Columbia, may direct that the national flag be flown at half-staff, in the event of the death of a present or former official of the respective government or in the event of the death of a member of the Armed Forces from that jurisdiction.35 Presidents also have ordered the flag to be flown at half-staff on the death of leading citizens, not covered by law, as a mark of official tribute to their service to the United States. Martin Luther King, Jr. is among those who have been so honored.

Again, the provisions of the Flag Code on flying the flag at half-staff are, like all the Code’s provisions, a guide only. They do not apply, as a matter of law, to the display of the flag at half-staff by private individuals and organizations. No federal restrictions or court decisions are known that limit such an individual’s lowering his own flag or that make such display alone a form of desecration.

"A guide only"
so I guess they just make it up as they go.
typical!

But, put the rest of her hole life aside. That one afternoon, before the superbowl. When she sang. She just fricken nailed it. So many sing it so bad, forget parts, can not meet the range needed. But on that day, that girl nailed it. Kinda sad that voice went down the drain.

I had a friend in high school who was the guy in charge of the flag in the school. He was a stickler for the flag code and his lectures sort of rubbed off on me. Although the flag code punts with the 'not inconsistent with law' part, in general, I think that the flag is flown at half staff so often it has lost its meaning and significance.

Being someone from north of the boarder, our flag only goes down for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in serving our country! I'm sorry, but entertainers and the like don't deserve that respect, especially those who die of an overdose! I may end up ridiculed because of this but it's the chance I take... There has been many a times I've had to stand at attention with pride and honor as a Canadian soldier is carried home, those are the ones who deserve it the most!

Thanks Charly! For those who don't know down south, all of our soldiers in Canada who are killed in action are flown into an army base east of Toronto. From there, a large police escorted precession travels down our main hwy to downtown Toronto. Every bridge along that route is lined with people (police, fire, patriotic citizens, you name it!!!) who stand and give thanks to those who fight for us! I know it's been way too many times that I've stood there giving a salute, tear on cheek, remember those who paid the ultimate price! The ones who truly deserve the respect and honor of having our nation's flag lowered in their memory...

God bless our troops, Canadian and American!

First of all, it was not mandatory that the flag be flown at half mass, so I'm assuming owners of these flags made the choice.

I'm kind of tired of the Whitney bashing. The woman had a substance problem that she never was able to kick, like so many in her proffession. I'm sure this problem began innocently and got out of hand. Many of my favorite country singers have had a monkey on their back too.

The women had an angelic voice that touch many people, so she is news worthy, whether you liked her music or not.

She is not one of my heros but I can see where others may have made her more special. So let them have their memories and please quit bashing the lady. She suffered enough and is at peace now.

Lol the flags in question were owned by the citizens of New Jersey and were lowered at government owned buildings. I don't think the true owners of the flags had a say in the matter.

Secondly the angelic voice was a gift of heredity, check family tree.

Thirdly, she could have done incredibly wonderful things with that gift to help others but never did she was a diva that mainly cared only for herself.

I can see absolutely no reason for our flags to be lowered for her passing.

Also, no RK a sixties sitcom and a couple of hits are no reason to lower the flag for an entertainers death. Was that guy even American?

Gov. Christie ordered the flags at half mast, if he wouldn't have ordered that all the Whitney bashing wouldn't have happened, stupid decision. I agree she is news worthy, however she should not be given the same honor that is suppose to be reserved for people who have given so much more. If Whitney is the standard that needs to me met to lower the flags, the flags would always be at half mast.

Question? Are the flags flown on the back of motorcycles, pick-up trucks, or left after sundown in yards, on poles across America following proper flag etiquette? Just askin? JD
