Obama in Colombia: ‘Part of My Job Is to Scout Out Where I May Want to Bring Michelle Back Later for Vacation’
By Terence P. Jeffrey
April 15, 2012

(CNSNews.com) - Just two days after President Barack Obama gave a sharply edged response to news anchor Larry Conners of KMOV in St. Louis after Conners had asked the president about Americans who “get frustrated and even angered when they see the first family jetting around [to] different vacations and so forth,” Obama told a panel at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia that part of his job there was to scout out locations for a future vacation with First Lady Michelle Obama.

Obama was speaking on a panel with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff when he made the remarks. The panel was moderated by Chris Matthews of MSNBC.

“I want to thank President Santos and the people of Colombia for the extraordinary hospitality in the beautiful city of Cartagena,” said Obama. “We're having a wonderful time. And usually when I take these summit trips, part of my job is to scout out where I may want to bring Michelle back later for vacation. So we'll make sure to come back sometime in the near future.”

How are YOUR vacation plans this year?
Or you cutting back on any trips or tests or trials??

I am so happy our tax dollars can help the less fortunate enjoy a vacation or two and look forward to many more vacations.

One can only hope that Obama is having someone writing his memoirs after next January while he is on permanent vacation.

I know RK will jump in on this himself...but ...

It's not Mr Obama's money that is sending him around the world... if it were, I doubt any of us would have a problem with it. I dont take issue with Donald Trump's vacations. :)

And it's unlikely that even the Donald's vacations run up the tab like the prez does.

I guess once you're elected president, you're no longer entitled to go on vacation or even out to dinner. I remember when the right was beside themselves that the press and his wife went out for their anniversary.

Once elected, he should stick his family into the residence at the White House, and they should all just stay there until his term is done. In fact, they should just give up on having a life forever, because you know ex-presidents have security details. It costs money to send them guys around with the ex-president.

If every thing goes right, he will have plenty of time for vacation, real soon!!!

I think there does come a time when people are suffering and struggling that one could make a better choice of words.
Sometimes it comes across as flaunting.
Or to a degree, he is out of touch with the regular guy, ya know??

Please answer this Buzz, have you made any concessions or changes to any of your leisure travel plans?

In these fiscally trying times, that idea might have some merit. I haven't been more than 300 miles from home in about five years now as gas just eats us up (I mean from day to day, consuming a large part of what used to be discretionary income, forget what it would cost to take a trip)

It's amazing how soon the left, liberals, socialist, progressives, etc. forget the constant abuse President Bush was under anytime he anywhere. Amazing simply amazing how these people think.

I get two weeks paid vacation each year from my employer.

Oh... and those two weeks paid vacation does NOT mean they PAY FOR MY VACATION.

I dont mind them going on a trip...but their vacation time should be the same as any working man/woman... 2 weeks pd salary. period.
NOT:

GIRLS' TRIP TO SPAIN: AUGUST 2010

The exact cost is unclear as Mrs Obama and her 40 friends footed many personal expenses, such as hotels and meals themselves.
But the U.S. taxpayer would have paid for the First Lady's 68-strong security detail, personal staff, and use of presidential jet Air Force Two.
Per diems for the secret service team runs at around $281 each - nearly $98,000 for the length of the summer break.

Use of Air Force Two, the Air Force version of a 757, comes in at $149,900 for the round trip. This does not include time on the ground.

Mrs Obama's personal staff, of which there are an unknown amount and might cost considerably more per day, should also be taken into account.

CHRISTMAS BREAK IN HAWAII: DECEMBER 2010 and again in 2011.

According to the Hawaii Reporter, the bill for the $1.5m trip included:

$63,000 on an early flight bringing Mrs Obama and the children to Hawaii ahead of the President.
$1,000,000 on Mr Obama’s return trip from Washington on Air Force One.
$38,000 for the ‘Winter White House’ beach property rental
$16,000 to rent nearby homes for Secret Service and Navy Seals.
$134,000 for 24 White House staff to stay at the Moana Hotel.
$251,000 in police overtime.
$10,000 for an ambulance to be on hand at all timesSKI TRIP TO VAIL: FEBRUARY 2011

Mrs Obama and her daughters stayed at the Sebastian hotel on Vail Mountain, where rooms cost more than $2,400 for multi-bedroom suites.
The family appear to have flown there on Air Force Two.
They were escorted to the resort by a motorcade of about a dozen vehicles, including 15 state and local law enforcement officers
Easily another cool half million spent.

SUMMER HOLIDAY ON MARTHA'S VINEYARD: AUGUST 2011

The Blue Heron Farm estate, where the Obama family are currently staying, rents for about $50,000 a week.
According to U.S. News and World Report, the Coast Guard is required to keep ships floating near the property, the presidential helicopter and jet remain at the ready and security agents will be on 24-hour duty

And to further my point....
If my company were turning a trillion dollar deficit each year, they would cut my vacation time (or FIRE my butt!)

There is nothing wrong with them going out to dinner for their anniverary. However flying on airforce one to NYC from DC for dinner and a play is an issue. Think about the security costs to the taxpayer. There are many fine dining restaurants etc in the metro DC area. They could have had a great night out without wasting a ton of taxpayer money!

I read an article that explained that both Bush presidents spent all their Christmas holidays at Camp David; brought their families there for the holidays. This was certainly less expensive for the taxpayer ... but a supplementary reason given was that then all the POTUS staff could be close to home & also get to spend some time with their families for the holidays.

Quite possibly it was done with the thought in mind that the Friendly Media would have Cruxified them for taking a vacation when the country was on the brink.;)

Both Bushes did this ... for ALL their Christmas holidays. Certainly there was a good year or two among them?

Camp David isn't exactly slumming it for Christmas!

Personally, I like to "go home" for the holidays. Too bad Hawaii isn't home... If it was, I probably would want to go there to be with family and friends.

Aw, c'mon, Buzz. neither Bush may have been a POTUS you could commend for their accomplishments ... but both of them, and their wives, were pretty decent human beings.

I'd be happy to hear some vignettes about how Michelle and Barack show kindness to their staff.

RK

Over 3-1/2 years that works out to one round every 2 wks, but would figure that the golf probably overlapped with vacations & maybe was also clustered in vacation time as well.

If he can play golf AND do his job, I won't argue with his recreational time. However, if he plays golf INSTEAD of doing his job, then I have a problem.

Obviously, opinions will vary which of those two the POTUS has accomplished.
