it's about that time of year & the SD magazine has a short article by a Sturgis resident who also teaches Business at a nearby college.

Sturgis, a town of 6,500 residents will host the annual week long biker rally with appproximately 1/2 a million attendees. Since 1938 with the exception of a couple of years during WW II when gas rationing was in effect. This equates to 160,427 people per square mile. They will throw about 500 of those guests in jail, 350 will require ER & a couple will suffer failed tickers & croak. 3 million Gallons of Beer , 500 tons of rally garbage.

They will deposit approximately $987 mill around the country, coming, going & staying at a rate of $180 per day. Some folks trailer their creations to the rally, the die hards ride in, don't own Rain gear & look the part. Folks will camp out so things get fairly ripe around the area, the Buffalo Chip will host 25,000 on 600 acres with concerts, etc. Bikes are parked 4 deep along the streets, a real sight.

Never been other than to pass through during setup time, many were already there. saw some biker babes & am reminded of our old school song with a variation:

Godiva was a lady who through Sturgis did ride
To show to all the villagers her lovely lily white hide.
The only one who noticed, an engineer who'd been dipping the barley
As the lovely godiva rode by on her Harley ;-).

Reminds me of the definition of "observant"...the only guy to notice there was a horse under Lady Godiva. ;-)
