The Open is starting with a triple with two retired. It is very hot and the judges have added some water to the test to help the dog with the heat. The bird thrown on the long mark is in the water so any dog that gets it has to go for a swim. The first bird down is the long retired thrown right to left along a dike at the end of a pond. It splashes in the water near the far left-hand corner of the pond in or near some green, grassy cover. This gunner has a stick man with both black and white so that he will be visible as the light changes. Second down is the short retired on the left thrown left to right from a well-disguised, grassy holding blind. It falls near a low rock visible to the handler from the line. The flyer is the medium distance bird shot right to left, angled back into the test and can be visually tight to the long mark gunner. The ground undulates and generally slopes right to left so that the flyer gunners are sitting on top of a high spot while the left-hand mark is on a lower level. The line to the long mark runs beneath the flyer gunners and then drops over a hill into the water and shorelines in the water to the mark. Once the dog disappears over the hill, it is out of sight for awhile until it can be seen shorelining straight toward the bird or coming out of the lower left corner of the pond and taking a land route or appearing way to the right at the opposite side of the pond from the bird. The short retired mark has proven difficult for a few dogs and has resulted in some hunting. But the long mark has proven difficult for many of the dogs. Some have taken the land route but curved straight in to the bird. Some have taken a perfect shoreline toward the bird but end up getting out on the dike and putting up a significant hunt. Others have made a bigger swim than needed and ended up on the other side of the pond often followed by a big hunt to the bird. Some have gotten lost in the field after taking the land route. There have been a few that have taken the correct line straight to the bird.

The Amateur started off with a triple in some heavy cover with a small pond up front on the way to all marks. First down was the shorter retired on the right thrown right to left from a mound with tall cover. Second down was the longer retired on the left thrown left to right. The flyer was in the middle shot right to left. The birds were all at somewhat similar distances with the flyer being the longest mark. The line to the flyer and the line to the right hand bird were fairly tight causing many dogs to flair to the right when sent to the right hand mark and disappear in heavy cover behind the mound where the gunner was retired or hunt the mound. Some dogs recovered after a significant hunt and came back to get the bird. Others did not recover. On the left retired, some dogs hunted the middle distance between that mark and the flyer and got lost or had significant hunts. The wind changed throughout the day making the test harder or easier.

Callbacks to the 2nd series (30 dogs):
