I am a newbie to the forum and a rank rookie trainer. I have a 2 1/2 year old lab. She has no formal training other than sit stay come. As she is not so great at heeling I recently got a heeling stick. I am not certain how to apply the correction with the stick. Instructions say to hold the stick in the same hand as the side the dog heels, in my case it's the left side. She tends to creep ahead as well as drift to the left. I can contact her left side when she drifts but the only way I can correct when she creeps is to contact her head with the stick in my left hand. It seems more intuitive to contact her chest to correct the creeping. What's the right way to do this? With both dummies and birds she does not return to hand. I want to teach her to return the dummy/bird to hand at the heel. I would like to force train her but I am not sure I am up to the task, and really can't afford pro trainers. Can I teach her to force hold and if so what is the best method?
