Hi All I am posting this in as many places as I can, trying to come up with an answer, so if you have seen it on Work Gold or Facebook, please understand.
My boy, Tag (2 years, 7 months old GR), who is out of a litter I bred, is presenting me and my vet with a mystery illness. It started about two years ago. Sudden high fever, 104-105, decreased appetite and activity. Blood test revealed elevated white blood cells, around the 38k range.
The first time it happened, we administered antibiotics and his appetite and activity returned to normal. Fever dropped. All was good and right with the world. A couple months later it happened again. Did a couple TBD panels, and sent blood out for more stringent testing. Prescribed more, heavier, antibiotics and issue cleared. Needless to say this happened ever couple months, then stopped for almost a year. He had an episode in September 2012, one in February 2013 and just yesterday. I've had him to a specialist who found nothing. Yesterday the vet did joint taps and a urine screen. He is on Doxy and Pred right now.
We've tested for Auto Immune and Addisons. Looking at maybe Poly Arthritis or Pyelonephritis but at this point these are just guesses. Has anyone heard of unexplained symptoms like this? Not only is my little buddy miserable when this happens, but it is getting rather expensive to do all these tests that, for the most part, come back normal. Thanks for any input or suggestions.
Have they talked about bone marrow problems?
How long a course of antibiotics (Doxy) has the dog been on each time?
No to the marrow problems. Three and four week Doxy regime.
In my area, if a TBD is suspected, we do a six week course of Doxy. Back in the days when they only did two or three weeks worth, it kept coming back.
Grass awn or some foreign body?
I echo Sharon Potter's comments. Search for Tick-L. The people that post on here have lots of experience and the basic treatment is 10mg of Doxi per pound, i.e. 70# Golden = 700mg of Doxi daily for 8 weeks. Kill the damn disease, don't tickle it! There are so many TBD and they present in many different ways. This list is helpful. Be your own advocate for your dog's health. Try this web site - www.vintagegoldens.com/tick.html. Good luck!

He underwent surgery two weeks later to get it-( waited that long to clear the infection) and it moved again. We never found it-but its been about three/four years now and knock wood- gone.
But thats what I would do-is ultrasound him and see what they find-
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I am going to print this off and discuss it with my vet. Someone also suggested SRM, in case someone else checks this thread out for answers. You all ROCK!
Did he check for fungal infections. I'm going through it right now. Pretty much same symptoms without the fever.
