Goverment math/value for a dollar

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline.

A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.

They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons / year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption.

And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl.

So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion to save $350 million.

How good a deal was that ???

They'll probably do a great job with health care though!!

But it was good for the economy, right??

What happens if those vehicles last 5 years? not just one. Or, heaven forbid, they last to 120,0000 or even 200,000 miles?, or if oil prices go up?

Cash for Clunkers, Another Obama failure just like all the jobs he was going to create with the Stimulus Plan. Look it up, unemployment is the highest in 25 years. Can any Obama supporter mention one thing he's done that has been successful?

This is off topic, but how about, his run for President or his continuation of Bush's policies to stabilize the banking industry. There are two things.
You seem to view things only in the very short term, just like that simplistic analysis of the cash for clunkers program. I think it is tough to criticize the program for its effect of stimulating the auto industry or for its effect on reducing carbon emissions. Very easy to criticize it as a government handout program and I agree. Its funny though that, I know a good number of conservatives with brand new vehicles bought with the program. Just where are their principles?

Yea, but I just got the e-mail today and it was a slow news day.:p

The cars bought with CFC might last 10 years, but they might also be traded in for another new car before that. In 5 years, it is likely that they will be trading to a car that can get better mpg. There's no question in my mind that oil will continue to go up in price since we know that the supply of oil is finite. Those who benefited most from CFC were people who could afford to buy a new car.

I also believe that the CFC program served a short-term goal, but does not provide a long-term solution. It's possible that economic recovery does need a careful combination of short-term and long-term solutions. Start momentum, then a follow-up plan to allow the momentum to be self-sustaining.

It was only a matter of time ... the Natl Assn of Realtors® is campaigning for an expansion and extension of the $8000 tax credit for purchasing a home. Not entirely sure whether I agree or disagree with that. Truthfully, I did prefer the original proposal of the interest-free loan, rather than the outright credit.
