A memorial to a Murderer paid for with taxpayer money is just what this country needs. I'm sure Obongo will be all for it.
I have no problem with lobbyists...
If we're really going to go for the porkers, let's go for the meat:
If you look at the record over a two year period, Diane Feinsten and Murtha are very high on the list along with luminaries such as Lindsey Graham ($693 million solo earmarks) and Sen Kay Bailey Hutchison ($939 million in solo earmarks).
- Richard Shelby, Rep. AR: http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...or_shelby.html
- Kit Bond, Rep, MO: Credited with $96 million in individual earmarks in the 2009 Senate Omnibus Budget bill (Senator Macaskill, Dem, MO, requested none.). http://bond.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Issues.View&Issue_id=c659a958-efcb-55ff-a664-f2a80da2d574.
- Thad Cochran, Rep, MS: Sponsored earmark requests of more than $2 billion in 2008/09 and received $76 million in solo earmarks in the 2009 Senate Omnibus Bill. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009...sive-spending/
- Lisa Murkowski, Rep, AK: Received $74 million in solo earmarks in the 2009 bill and sponsored over $300 million in earmarks, and then issued statements on the outrageous earmarks included by Democrats in the stimulus bill. http://www.legistorm.com/earmarks/de...type/desc.html
I don't believe any of the Porkers mentioned by Yardley murdered anyone like Kennedy did.
You don't have to do the research. I already included some examples. However, Republicans dominated the earmark game consistently -- one of the advantages of having control of the WH and Congress for as long as they did. This rolled over to the Omnibus Budget reconciliation bill signed by Obama in March that included over $7 billion in earmarks of which the overwhelming bulk went to Republicans (e.g. 4/5 of the top senators receiving earmarks are republican. You can see a non-partisan itemization of earmarks by member of congress at http://www.legistorm.com/earmarks.html.
FWIW, Texas received $4.5 billion in earmarks, or more than any state except California. Florida received over $3 billion and is in a virtual tie with New York. Thosde results are actually consistent with state ranks by population.
