Anyone watch 60 min. Sunday night?
Had a bit on teachers, collective bargining and a school on east coast that pays up 125K yr. for the right teacher.
Pretty interesting.
I believe that it was 60min. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.;-)

Rebroadcasted segment with updates on the two teachers not retained. Other person of interest was the former NY city schools super who had been trying for years to eliminate tenure for teachers as a means of job security. He said it is all but impossible to remove NY city teachers.Quote:

I can honestly say that I haven't watched 60 Minutes in over 15 years and plan on keeping my string in tact.

The US has a long way to go in education. Technology available has not been put to use (job protection?), competition should be embraced & while 125K was thrown out there, I doubt if any of those on the program saw that kind of money. IMO unless someone was a recognized expert in their field they should not even approach that wage teaching. & then they could make money consulting using the education job as a base. We had a Mineralogy Prof at SDSM&T who tripled his school stipend during the summer consulting. He was one of the best Prof's I had going through school. But really smart people trained in other disciplines are not welcome in the education field.
What disturbs me is the desire of the K-12 establishment to carve a niche in students free time. IMO if the educators did a better job of organization, the time they are alloted would be sufficient.
Our local station did a bit on a teacher going to Costco to pick up bulk supplies for an add on in her science class, implying it was at her expense. While that may be admirable, why does she want to be on TV? & what is being left out that is a necessary part of kid's education? Every teacher teaching what they want to doesn't create much of a curriculum. But I did notice the structured atmosphere in the classroom referenced in OP.
