There are oodles of old threads regarding dog boxes and I've been through them ALL, but specifically, I'm interested in anyones opinion as to the minimum comfortable box width for larger Chessies, in the 90lb. range? Normal travel is between 2 to 6 hours. My thought is 20 inches would be too tight for longer trips.

My guys aren't that big and my boxes are around that size and 90% of the time they curl up in the back of the box only using about 1/3 of the box. If the box is to large and you get in a fender bender they have more room to bounce around. What size of crate do you use at home?

Deb, we use the extra large wire crates at home. Our male stands 27 inches at the front shoulders and the extra large crate is exactly 27 inches high. It's about 25 inches wide and I believe 30 deep. I agree it is important that the box not be too big for safety reasons on the road. Thanks for the info.

I think the average size dog does fine in 20" wide boxes, but for the larger dogs, 22"-24" wide is much better.
The holes in my box are 17.5" wide, my Lab is 65 lbs and my Golden is 55. They have all the room they need. I don't want them standing up or bouncing off the walls if in an accident. They have room to turn around and enough room to lay down comfortably. They are also never left in the box for longer than a 3 or 4 hours without being aired and given the chance to stretch their legs
