The point is/was (which you missed or ignored) Viet Nam was Frances problem, they couldn't handle it.

I absolutely got it and also saw the irony of Zeus's post since the most divisive issue of my early years involved our taking over "France's problem".

And, neither could we. Those people were fighting for thier freedom. In the south, we set uo a corrupt Diem government. When Ho pleaded with the Ike administration, we refused because of our relationship with France so, they tured to the Communist for help.

Imperalism after WW2m was no longer acceptable to Indochina. The French thought they could retake them as a colony and learned otherwise.
