Not so soft mouth
My lab is getting old enough to where I need to start working her with birds. I started with a frozen dove. When she grabs it she immediately starts chewing and biting on it. She still brings it back but when I get the bird from her it's all chewed up and I have to get a new one. Any ways I can make her bring it back in one piece?
OK young fella. Hope you're having fun with your new puppy.
Basically at her young age once you find out she's birdy and will retrieve a bird, discontinue using birds until you get the first several months of basics done.
Pigeons are not the best choice for a puppy because feathers come out easily in pups mouth and they get to mouthin n chewin.
Did you get one of the puppy basic training dvd's?
No. But by basics you mean obidience?
Y and no. Obedience is part of basics. Now you teach simple obedience and later during basics you "formalize" your obedience.
Go to these 2 sites. And see if you can buy both of the dvd's. One by Jackie Mertens is a very good introduction to retriever puppy training. The other is by a famous young dog trainer Bill Hillmann. His dvd is more technical but if youre a smart kid you could follow it. Bill also has a site where you can ask questions.
Ill post other links in a minute
2) Mr Bill Hilmann's videos. Retriever Training & Traffic Cop.
3) Mr Bill Hillmann's blog
Thanks but do you have any tricks to keep her from doing that? Like I've heard of somebody wrapping barbed wire around a bird and the dog wouldn't chew it
That's the way old school,do not do it!
the way to get her to stop doing it now is to not give her birds!
AFTER you start her proper training birds will be introduced.
Look! Get Mr Hillmann's dvd, follow it EXACTLY, and forget misc things you have heard.
If you have to choose one dvd go with Mr Hillmann's puppy dvd and join in on the website where he posts advice.
It would be excellent if you were to follow his method to video every session and post them on youtube for Mr Hillmann to comment on.
Actually i recommend you try to do just that. Like having your own professor online.
Quite Common for a Puppy to Munch 'EmSomeBirds. As Breck Say time to stop using birds and go about teaching and formalizing a proper way to hold, and commands for Fetch etc. using bumpers, Then switch back to birds later, after hold has been taught. How old is the pup exactly? Hold and fetching is usually started after adult teeth are in, until then basics would consist of OB, Hallway retrieve and recall, with soft bumpers/socks, and general household manners.
Some articles if your not into buying into a system, at least they give an idea, still I would recommend getting with a mentor in the area to help out. If you going to use a collar proper CC is a must, I haven't come across an article I like for that, hands on with a mentor is the way to go.
Keep in mind the OP is in 8th or 9th grade.
Got to give him credit for even wanting to train his dog. When I was that age, I was lucky to get to school on time.
