not teaching them to avoid cover - using it to my advantage to AVOID the BB. that was the OP's question. once the dog is running to the mark and not the BB, you can work on cover for the mark.

but here is my wacky idea -
make the path to the BB more difficult w/obstacles than the path to the bird. young dogs don't like tough cover so use that to your advantage if possible.
I would never teach them to avoid cover in any circumstance.
