I, too, am mystified. What does dropping a bumper short have to do with forcing the dog to fetch? ;) 'Hold!' is 'Hold!' is 'Hold'...unless, of course, one blows by that to get to the sexy...

Well, here's what worked for me and my dog, and a couple of others.

I wondered why a dog, as a species, would evolve the 'shake'. Seemed obvious... to get the water off his coat so's he'd dry...

Because the dog has not generalized the concept of 'hold' to 'hold' coming out of the water, or 'fetch' and/or 'hold' to a goose.
