Looking forward to seeing her, Tony.

Picked up at a Tower Shoot last month, and couldn't agree more. Take advantage of the training opportunity, and leave the gun at home!
I've never trained a dog to pick up sheds, so I can't give much insight into that behavior. However, I've taught retrievers to quarter and flush upland birds. With many Labs, this is an inherent...
Sorry Bama...I wasn't very clear in my question. What I meant to ask, is do you want your Lab to quarter and flush the quail, or walk at heel and retrieve shot birds.
Your Lab is more than capable of retrieving small game (such as quail) and shed hunting. In regards to training, do want your dog to quarter and flush, or simply walk at heel and retrieve shot game?
My females avg. around 50 lbs. in "fighting weight". Doubt I'll ever apply for a swan tag, so they're more than capable of picking up anything I send them for. They also fit comfortably in the...
I hope everyone else is enjoying this thread as much as I am! What a pleasure to hear these stories, "straight from the horses mouth", so to speak. I grew up just minutes from Nilo Farms, and never...
It could definately be your location, as I'm not familiar with your neck of the woods. Anyway, no worries...as I'm just happy this thread stayed "above the table" and everyone pretty much behaved...
JB, I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree. Again, I know of NO ONE who breeds "UK field-bred" Labs with "looks" as their first, second, third...priority. They are bred to be...
JB, I have to believe you're confusing British "show-bred" Labs when you make such an observation. It's very common to find Labs of British "field-bred" ancestry in hunt tests and duck blinds.
Excellent thread...most refreshing!
Eug, I see Paddy made his way back into the IGL this year. Have you ever had the opportunity to see him run?
Ah, Keith Mathews of Copperbirch Labradors. I own a pup sired by FTCH Copperbirch Paddy (bred by Keith). Looks like it's been well-produced, based on the trailer. Maybe time to put this on the...
Here's a story for your wife to help put it in perspective.
Last waterfowl season, a member of our hunting club approached me about finding him a Chocolate Lab pup. I did some research, and...
Attend the handler's meeting prior to the test and ask questions if you have them. Watch the test dog run to help you get a feel for it. Take a deep breath before you begin...and remember...this is...
Wayne, you got that right, but I sure am glad they're NOT all like this!
"Keene's Josie's on a Vacation of Kopmeier"...call name Josie.
I've participated in a few of these trials, and judged one as well. They are a blast, although sometimes tough on the blood pressure, if you're handling a "hot" dog.
John, I couldn't agree more. Most of my waterfowl hunting is done in either flooded timber or corn, which requires my dogs' to pick up birds out of my line of sight. The only test/trial scenario...
We just finished a kennel project using pavers, and I'm very happy with the results. Adding to the previously-mentioned advice, I also recommend using a paver sealer. I bought a 5 gallon container...
If your goal is to train a servicable waterfowl retriever, this dvd can indeed be helpful.
Enjoy the moment and have fun. Each test is a learning experience, no matter the results. Best of luck!
Nancy, you don't have to convince me of anything, and I'm good with that. Everyone has their own goals, and we all know that there are many, many ways to skin a cat. And yes, it is brutal to watch...
