I disagree that the derby (or the qual) for that matter should be designed with the newbie in mind. Field trials by their very design will never appeal to the masses because most (not all) people...
The disappearing gun.....one of my favorite derby tests.

There is a fairly active club just outside of Omaha where you should be able to find a training group. http://www.movalleyhuntclub.org/index.php Another one in Lincoln, NE which will probably be...
Good handling vs poor handling is very hard to describe in writing but easy to recognize for anybody who has judged even a few trials and takes an observant eye towards handling when judging. Ted...

Given the fact that dog #1 did not get in the water on the shorter bird in the scenario, has not the dog at some level indicated a "reluctance to enter.......
I would call all three back and could not yet place the dogs.
I would also look at sytle which is the second criteria you are specifically directed to judge in a derby (marking ability and style...
Jim,
Perhaps you might try dealing with the issue indirectly. If the dog has been conditioned to the collar, try taking the dog back into a controlled environment like your back yard and...
Jim,
I here what you are saying as far as some "marking" tests being more of a test of training than a test of marking. The best example I can think of is the "Indented Triple" with a short bird...
