We are required to shoot steel shot on any state or federal land around here. On private land we can still use lead.

I hunted alot of public ground last year and shot a couple cases of 7.5 steel...

I dont think its that pointer folks dont want an obedient dog, It comes down moreso to the fact that retrievers and pointing dogs have night and day difference between the jobs that they do....
