Most basic puppy books describe how to handle these little pup things. Libraries are great free resources for such. Always advise 'reading ahead' of time regardless of where you are in 'training'.

Good - you can't go wrong. Sometimes you have to poke a couple notes in. People get busy with their day jobs but most all clubs are happy to bring in new members.
Hopefully you can make it out to another training day.
Wait till you see what comes at 8 and 9 months!!!
What does 'No Luck' mean??
The original poster has not reposted yet.
Thank you.
Finn - you have mentioned heeling in your last two posts and I was responding to refusal of whistle sit with distractions.
Either way, Steve is correct on any number of commands...
Treat the disease not the symptom. You're looking at this wrong.
I think people blame 'tests' too much as it is but aside from that - whistle sit means whistle sit and you have to train harder...
Yes - crack the dogs azz with a stick and blow the whistle. The give some continuous pressure till the butt hits the ground on a whistle stop. All in the yard. Then with some distraction. Then...
Slips the whistle and becomes self-employed running a blind?
LabGuy - all good comments above. I don't have any hard data but seems to me most 1st time retriever/collar trainers don't have a pup ready at 4 months despite what books they've read or programs...
Yes - learning how to take ownership will get you a long way over the course of training your dog.
Hopefully this isn't the chat:
Honey, please go back to the store and get me some medicated heel pads, they are down by the hose. Make sure you get the mark-down. I need to sit or whoa I'm gonna...
I put my dog at sit when filling the bowl. It's not a test or a dominant exercise - I just don't need a big nose of help. ;)
Good point. Something similar happened recently with my SFO based flight crew.
I use OK.
And it's not worth arguing over the other.
I like 9 or 10. WAY easier when they get home. Flip the breeder an extra fifty and pick up after travel issues if you can.
Kinda sounds like fun.
Good - he's probably right. It'll be a continued work in progress as some dogs are just more vocal or strung. It's expressive, it's just not permissible. The main thing is learning how to manage...
kjrockohld - sounds like you're trying to do all the right things. I wouldn't do the dog park unless all the yuppies there won't lynch you if you make an appropriate correction, as needed. That,...
IMO - given what you've written this has to be addressed directly and indirectly. 11 months is young to be displaying the behavior. Hopefully the pup left the litter at 7/8 weeks or older?
...
Agreed - poison makes it tougher. Good training though on a dog at the senior level that also hunts waterfowl.
I was referring to a diversion bird being thrown on a senior dog returning with, what is typically, the memory bird.
Curious why you think that's tough on a senior dog?
Thanks Swamp. The dirt always seems to get closer though!!
