I witnessed a similar occurrence at the GRCA Specialty Field Trial held at FT AP Hii,VA in 1978 or 1979.
The dog picked up the second bird while retrieving the long bird. Did not drop either bird...
I suggest that you read the post started by Randy Bohn "For the fire breathing dog owner." The thread is insightful and detailed.
It it relevant, and addresses, directiy, your problem.
I'm certain...
Dave Elliot, handler, the man responsible for introducing handling to Retriever Field Trials.
Fondly referred to, and remembered by earlier Field Trialers as "Elliots' Curse."
He has a unique...
Re Post #22 Use of the hand???
Perhaps the judge was refering to "intensive lining" (AKC Hunt Test reg (p. 25 Section 6).
Or perhaps the judge was inexperienced and was not very good at explaining...
There is a "hunt 'em up" whistle.
If the dog has been taught to respond to a certain whistle tone, inflection, volume when the paticular activity, in this case, to intensify the search in a certain...

I retired 10 years ago.I worked on Ft Meade at the Regional Veterinary Laboratory (now at Ft Sam Houston) for 20+ years. I trained my dog(s) daily, weather permitting, and duck and goose hunted...

Turn on sound.
Find a person/persons in your area to train with (field work), or a local Retriever club. People that train alone tend to have dogs that will not hunt out any further than you can throw a bumper.

Ken,
He could have started with Chessies and probably would have given up!
Just think about the great loss for all the retriever folks if that had happened.
Perhaps there will also be a video included to further enlighten the RTF folks.
I'm curious as to how far this revision of methods has progressed.
If videos are added, they will bring back...
I am retired and have the time to judge. I can judge minor stakes and Hunt Test(s) at all levels.
My AKC judge # Z4796.
Let me know if I can help.
Thanks,

I am following this thread and wondering if the OP has been running Hunt Tests for a few years,( !0+) , or is relativly new to the sport.
I would remind him that there is a very large difference in...

I was wondering how many states have "hunt(er) interference" laws.
Maryland does, passed in 1990, due to the PETA type organizations around the DC area.
The law is an effective tool to control the...

Had both done about 10 years ago. color vision difference was apparent because I had one eye done in 2001 and the other done a year later. You will need reading glases, vision correction was...
A suggestion:
Go to the gun shop with an 8.5x11" graph paper (1.0 grid) and ask to photograph the gun with the graph sheet under it . Youn should be able to transfer the scale to your...
Some of the judges that have been judging for more than 25 years, myself included, are not able to keep a dog for various reasons, so after 2012 will not be able to judge.
I always, when asked to...
I use a wood burning tool or small soldering iron to nark/ID collar(s). Never wears off!
Check with the "Collar Clinic", they can probably help solve your problem.
I would think that instead of "instant answers" from unknown sources (knowledgable and rank beginners) posting answers to some very technical questions, the subforum would include a bibliographical...
I would like to thank you for trying, and I wish that more owners with Golden Retrievers would be as bold!
WC and WCX and very few MH Goldens is all that you see when looking through the "show...
The handler using a cap/hat to handle in a HT was addresses in the RFTN HT Q&A column when Milton Holcolm was the Editor (1990?).
The answer then, and still is, it is legal means of handling in...
I don't think that it is an advantage for the dog.Maybe a psycological advantage for the handler. As I stated, I don't think the dog needs it, if the dog & handler are working as a team.
As for the...
I have been running and judging at AKC Hunt Tests since the "80"s. Over the past few years I have noticed that some handlers come dressed as Ninjas, or Johnny Cash or Pallidin, that is, dressed in...
