I have never understood FF either, I always thought it was something that trainers used on pointers that otherwise would not retrieve. I could understand if you where dealing with a dog with a hard...

I never understood the notion of steading a dog too early. The common belief that it takes drive out of a dog does not hold water in my opinion.
I male lab was never ment to be any bigger than 80 pounds and I feel even thats on the heavy side. My dog ways about 65 pounds.
