I like the mats suggested by EdA. Lowes has something similar but it is a little heavier and harder to haul out to the field.
I like the full size mat for stand alones since it is easier for me...

If you want to ruin () your dog with tug toys, I recommend these:

My two dogs play tug a war with each other. Or, alone, they...
Whoa!
You're sayin' Gooser ain't right?
Well this has been a very helpful thread for me.
Much thanks to all!
It's prolly just as well, Justin.
According to Gooser, Miss Vicky is some kinda movie star.
Once word gets out that she is in SLC, Robert Redford and the whole Sundance crowd is gonna be...
Ok, I'm off to attach duck caller to whistle lanyard....
There are other venues besides AKC. I have run exactly one AKC HT but watched quite a few, and in them the gunners used the duck calls, not the handlers. So maybe it is not an AKC...
Dog running a water triple? We're not talking minor stakes, then. It's too bad that handler screwed up, but if it were a MH test, the rules are quite clear in AKC.
Ahah!
Ok, so now I think you are saying that maybe no, dog may not be learning about marking, if you have to handle...BUT sometimes you have to handle, and forget about the mark (as others have...
Granddaddy pointed out an error in my response, I should have written about dog showing that intended to get out early.
So dog gets a handle when it shows it's intent. If dog continues to shore...
What's the "permission cast"???
First time I remember hearing this term! :-)
This is a great thread.
On the one hand I have worried about my dog's safety on some setups, on the other hand I think I am over cautious.
As a newb, I tend to defer to more experienced...
Do you know which issue?
I guess that is where "read the dog" comes into play.
Edit: If dog starts heading for shore early, and continues on after bird boy "hey heys" you have a clue.
I'm categorizing bird boy help...
Thanks, Granddaddy. That's what I meant---I should have written that I would handle if dog LOOKS like it is going to beach early.
To me, this example is a no brainer handling decision (bolding mine).
Dog needs to learn to swim past the 1st gunner, so if dog beaches early because it is lost then you handle to teach dog the 2...
I was wondering if the OP was working on too many things in the video. After dog returns there are lots of "sit" "hold" "heel" commands.
I'm not seeing a big loopy sit, just slow, so to these...
But that's not the question I have.
Steve Schreiner actually wrote exactly what I was wondering about. Once you handle dog enroute to mark, haven't you told dog where the mark is? And once...
I don't think there is a lag in the sound. If you notice, the hand goes down about the same time he says back---in fact no delay at all. You hear the come-in whistle as the dog picks up the bumper,...
In case it matters, I was thinking about the advanced FT dog when I started this thread. I am not wondering how to teach retired guns to a young dog.
I'm thinking of the advanced dog who is...
Maybe you should do a poll!:o
Seriously, Gooser? You want to argue semantics or jargon, but clearly you knew what I meant. Just like I usually know what you mean despite bad grammar, bad spelling and unconventional use of...
Thanks for your service to the sport, Paul.
I look forward to your full answer next week.
Exactly. I don't think he was trying to be mean, but his schtick has gotten old.
Paul, why do you feel compelled to make fun of people asking for help with retriever training, on a forum for people needing help with retriever training?
Why don't you tell us all how you...
