I prefer lt fall/winter litters and find the hunters like getting puppies in the winter too (and the pet people don't because they are all worried about potty training in the crappy weather!). Parvo and other soil borne pathogens tend to be a lot worse in the spring/ summer here and it cuts into my "play" time (competition). I raise my litters in my basement which is very comfortable for all of us, starting them on a tray of the pellets in their whelping box. Then they go to an ex pen w/ the potty pool set up in one half of my garage. This works beautifully and is very clean but you have to take the time to show the puppies starting at ~3 wks where they need to do their potties, so it is a little more time consuming up front. Very well worth it those last 4 wks though, esp if you are so unlucky to have the runs go thru the litter!!!

I have the runs right now. Wormed em Friday, and they got VERY runny. They're playing fine & active, drinking water & now on bland diet. 4 days of diarrhea has me worried though! Of course it would happen over Labor Day when no vet is open!

Barton, I find that the summer litters tend to over drink causing the runs. If I take up the water at night, they're firmer in the morning confirms it With the nonstop rain we've had, we've dealt with coccidia and giardia for the first time in years. Can usually tell by the smell...and with coccidia/giardia, see mucous and/or blood vs just loose from overdrinking.

How did you treat the C & G?

And thanks for the heads up! I've been all concerned trying to keep them hydrated, and I could be causing the problem!

Id be more worried of they weren't still excited, bouncy, running, and acting awesome!

Coccidia is treates with Albon, giardia with metronidazole, both from the vet after taking stool sample in. One puppy had giardia, separated him, couple of days later, had another tested, coccidia, no giardia, treated all puppies for both once one was dx.
