Default Lab pup lost his drive to retrieve

    Hello all,

I have a six month old yellow lab. He is a great dog from an excellent bloodline and is full of energy. Up until recently he was responding very well to the training, but a few weeks ago he sustained injuries to both front paw pads so I didn't get to work him for some time. I just started working with him again and he is responsive to every command (sit, stay, heel, whistle commands, ect) but will not retrieve. He will get on heel but when I toss a bumper he will run to the mark but turns around and come right back to me without the bumper. I tried going back to square one by tossing a bumper a few feet out and sending him. A few times he picked it up but did not return it to hand. I do not know what could have caused him loose his drive to retrieve when he was not missing a beat during training sessions prior to his injury. I did just move into a new house where I put a pen in the back yard. This is where he spends him time now when I am away versus staying in his crate before. Im not sure if this has anything to do with this behavior. I never over worked the dog and kept the training sessions short and fun so that he would not loose interest but now its as though he forgot everything he learned and is not willing work. I tried searching the web for possible solutions but found nothing, can anyone offer some insight on how I can correct this issue and get my dog back on track.

He's at the age he may be teething and it hurts to pick up a bumper. I'd relax and let him have some fun.

Probably teething. Check his mouth for blood and loose teeth.

He has not tried to break at all and he did pick up a few fun bumpers I threw but not nearly all of them. I don't know if its the specific bumpers I use that he is shying away from so I went a head and ordered a hand full of new ones that are different colors and materials. Hopefully he will take interest in those.

He is still a baby. Check to see if he is teething. Take him back to the hallway in the house and throw your dummy or a paint roller for him. I sit in the hall with my legs if front of me so the puppy can't get by me. Make it fun and exciting and praise the heck out of him. And relax. And he is not broken.

Fun bumpers. Leave the drills and obedient retrieves in the house for now. My Male black lab was the same way. You have to keep it fun at this stage. Pump him up, get him excited, praise him like crazy, you will feel stupid and you don't want anybody watching because they will fall out laughing but you have to be over reactive with joy. He will pick it back up. My Male black lab is 6 months and that is what got him back on track.

I would only throw maybe two happy bumpers with NO obedience mixed in. Definitely check his mouth , and relax.
