The Humco versions that I have seen are made with alcohol which can cause ear damage. I would use with caution if the intent is to treat a dog that has an ear infection. That's why most folks use a version with witch hazel rather than alcohol.

Alcohol also stings like a banshee if the ear is at all irritated. Poor dog..... Use witch hazel.

How do you apply it? Eye dropper and do you massage their ear after or nothing.

You can apply with an eye dropper, or put it in a little squirt bottle. Massage, let them shake their head (stand back) and then wipe with a cotton ball, or cotton makeup remover.

    Greg,
What brand & formula of dog food are you feeding. It is my experience that black tar goop in the ears is a symptom of an allergy. High grain foods even with rice can cause some dog to develope ear infections. When you use antibiotics for the infection now you may have killed the good bacteria in the gut that needs to be replaced. Lots of products to choose from. I use PROZYME 1/4 tsp with each cup of food each meal. Grain free foods can help a lot too. Have not seen a sign of ear issues in my dogs since I made changes in food and digestive aids in the early 90's.
    Training Isn't Expensive..... IT'S PRICELESS!

I have not had any ear issues since changing to grain free dogfood. I have one dog that used to get (yeast or ear infections) epeatedly.

I have used this in the past and it worked well.

Will this recipe work without the Gentian Violet Solution? Because is does get on/stain everything.

We went through the purple stuff regiment and switched to a PP Sensitive formula and we seem to be getting past the problem. Until then we have a BLM that fought chronic ear infections for a year or better.

The Gentian violet is antibacterial and antimicrobial, so you would be losing that if you left it out.
