I THINK that eye wipes are when another dog shows YOUR dog HOW to do it.....Shows him up......IE Wipes his eye

Eye wiping is when a dog doesn't find his bird, but the next one does. Since all the dogs are in a line as a walkup (think of it as a 10-12 dog upland hunt) and all the birds are shot before any of the dogs are sent, your dog has to be able to either mark all the birds or at least be able to hunt in a small area quickly. That's why the emphasis in UK type of FT is on using the nose of the dog more so than the eyes and why they send the dog to the area of the fall on a blind and not necessarily to the bird. Of course they are usually hunting in much thicker cover (turnip/beet fields, thickets, gorse) and over some really steep terrain at times, not to mention the fences!
Since they are usually shooting pheasant, they probably get some runners which makes the nose a more reliable game finder than the eyes.

Now if someone could please tell me what running on ICE is, I would really appreciate it!!! And no, I don't believe it has any thing to do with the chilly weather in the UK......or does it?

I had recently read about these type of hunts and in talking with several members of my southern Maine HRC club, we all thought it sounded fun. Hope it gets popular and takes off around the country. We have much smaller clubs up here in Maine, this might be just the ticket for us to be able to put on a second event each year. A full HT is a lot of work, often requiring more volunteers than a small club has. This is true both for my AKC and my HRC clubs' HT. The 2 Maine HRC clubs, Saco River HRC and Guns Up HRC have joined up this year to put on 4 HRC Upland tests all in one day on October 13th in the Bangor area. Bird season just opened here October1, but there is no hunting on Sundays, so this Sunday test should be lots of fun, and a chance to title all in a day! It is great to have new games to play with our dogs
