My two younger dogs' teeth have improved 100% since we moved to Taos. They chew on Pinon logs every evening. Not only cleans the teeth, they have lovely breath as well! The older dog is just not as interested in gnawing so he has had dental issues. I feed Euk dry and try to brush the older one's teeth about once a week.

I leave antler sheds in their kennels, one dog chews the heck out of them and has NO plaque ,while the other dog wont chew on them, and has some plaque build up.

The dog that chews on them ,it takes her about 2 months to chew a shed (small shed)

Frozen Raw bones work pretty good, or even frozen chicken (I have friend who feeds raw, whitest teeth you ever seen). But when it comes down to it ... It might be weird; but I bought a dental pick for just this purpose. Perhaps it's more strange that the dogs will just lay there and let me work on their teeth, but if I bring out a nail trimmer pandemonium breaks loose? Maybe I was a dental hygienist in another life

I buy elk sheds or cow femur bones. Wish I could just find a deer shed. They are very expensive.

I almost bought four full set skull mounts (they were only 6-7 pointers and small racks) just for the dogs they were $10 each. I did tell the seller what they went for as dog chews and that they should keep them to train their dachshund/rat terrier mix to hunt them. They said that they had never heard of such a thing and that they had thought that their dog was only interested in the hair left on one of the mounts. I think I may have started something there....

We raise Elk.. so When we cut antler each fall, they go to the dogs.. Most we send off to our trainer to use the antler for chew treats, and we keep a few for our dogs.. Ideally we send them with the velvet still on, and it makes them a little more attractive to the dogs (and adds joint repair through the velvet) Here are some of the antler cuts we did this yearCut Antler1.jpgElk 2013 1.jpgSplit 1013.jpgTheo 2013.jpg

My dog also has heavy plaque build up on her molars even though her teeth were cleaned at the vets and sparkly white this spring. My rescue lab hasn't got any plaque at all. The vet says it is genetic to some degree. Anyone ever heard that opinion?
