Default How many of you who hunt from a boat or stand...

Just wondering how vests may have changed the way hunters hoist dogs into a boat or onto a stand? In years past I got used to simply pushing down on the back of a dog's head/neck area to give them leverage to climb into the boat. But with the 'handle holes' in many vests I'm seeing it done like this more and more.

    Just curious.

I hunt from a boat but still bring my dog in the old fashioned way as you describe because the vest he wears does not have handles.

A stand and hide the boat far away.

I will call you a hunting partner when you jump in the freezing water and retrieve my ducks.

Depending on time of year and water temperature dictates the use of a vest or not. When using the vest I use the handles to host him into the boat on or onto a stand. A lot easier for me and the dog.

I routinely use a vest, our water's cold even on opening day. 90% of my hunting is out of our boat blind with the dog sitting either on the fore deck or smaller area next to the outboard. My dogs swim back to the boat, somehow even in deeper water put their front paws over the edge of the deck and expect me to haul them up by their skin or vest.

Depends on how much water we have during our waterfowl season. Only time I hunt out of a boat is when we have high water and can't hunt out of permanent blinds. Otherwise the dog is hunting out of a permanent blind with a dog run, etc. etc. To answer the question, I still use the old fashion way as well when hunting out of a boat.

90% of the time, mine hunt off a stand. They wear vests to protect thier abdomens from cypress knees, abrasions, etc. Very seldom can they not just hop back up on the stand, if not, I do the "push down."

I use the handles on the vest. Seems easier to me. I try not to hunt from a boat either unless its a place I don't have another option. I do plan to build a boat ladder in the near future though.
