Default GDG New IO S MAVERICKS for Mac GDG

I use an iMac as well as a MacBook Pro. I've received notification that the newest operating system, IO S Mavericks, is available for download.

After updating my iPhone before checking any reviews with the IO S 7, I think I lucked out and have had no big issues with it, although some apps just drain the battery life like crazy. So when I got the notification about the latest update for the iMac and MacBook Pro, I decided to read some reviews prior to downloading and installing it.

    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/

This is John Siracusa's 24 page review of the IO S Mavericks. I admit a lot of it is over my head or beyond my computing skills. (and I only got through the first 10 pages and the final chapter!!)

So....have any of our Mac gurus downloaded and installed the IO S Mavericks? Is it worth the change? My major concern is having my preferences or settings changed if I install this. I was on the phone with Apple Care for over 2 hours a couple of nights ago getting my Microsoft Office for Mac calendar to sync with my iPhone without iCal duplicating or triplicating all the entries. Same thing with my contacts. Now that those problems are resolved, I would hate to mess them up. (The major problem with those 2 issues was iCloud and iTunes not set up properly)

Any suggestions on using the new IO S Mavericks or not??

If you are worried, I would wait. Mavericks is a major change to the OS, even if what you see is not that big a deal. The thing is mostly designed to greatly extend battery life and applications are handled very differently. Also, there is a good chance that some of your smaller apps aren't ready yet and there will be an update soon, I am sure, to fix bugs.

That said, I upgraded my MBP at work and another test MBA with no problems. Being able restore via time machine if there are issues makes it a lot easier than the old days. The rest will wait until the testers are confident that all is well. We don't use iCloud extensively as we have our own (although if it works as advertised we may use more) but we are heavy users of iWork and the new version is nice. I like the tabbed finder particularly, but not so impressive if you aren't juggling multiple share points from a server all day.

DoubleHaul, thanks for the information. I think I will wait a few days and then upgrade the MBP and see how that goes before doing the iMac

I always like the latest. I watched the keynote on just the OS upgrade & proceeded. Haven't had a problem yet, but only been a few days. I'm a lifelong Windows guy; had my macbook pro about 3 months & haven't looked back. I wish somebody would have beat me over the head with my HP laptop years ago.
