    I wouldn't but you're welcome to.

Winchester Ranger is a solid inexpensive pump. Also comes in a youth 12ga or 20ga. You can usually find them online for cheaper than a new 870.

    I would offer 2 observations.

    1. If it don't fit you must quit. It's gotta shoot where you look.
    2. There are more critters that got dead by an 870 than all the others combined. Unbreakable, never fail absolutely reliable.

I think that you meant light mod, not improved mod.

Improved mod is halfway between modified and full.
Light mod is halfway between IC and mod.

Thank you - that is correct! Us guys that screw in an IC up top and Mod in the bottom - get confused sometimes.

You answered a question with a question.

How does steel shot strain a barrel?

What specific reasons would you NOT shoot steel shot out of an older 870 Modified choke?

    I answered a question with a question...lol.

I wouldn't use steel in an older Modified barrel because it will strain the barrel, it wasn't designed to throw steel . I would use a softer non-tox.

Let me ask you: Would you run steel through an older 870 with a full choke?

Get the second gun and learn to shoot it. I have a short LOP and have no problems shooting these guns. As far as recoil is concerned, when you have ducks and geese locked up, in your face, you won't feel a thing.
Also felt recoil can be exaggerated due to poorly mounting the gun. High and tight is the way.
I'm a small guy and I used to shoot a BPS 10 and never had any issues with felt recoil.
