    Default Late to stand.....

Anyone had a dog not stand? Anyone had a dog stand LATE in her cycle? If so how late? Sent my female to get bred, she is currently day 15. (Experienced) Male started trying day 12, she would sit down. Day thirteen she ran from him anytime he tried to mount. Yet to see what happens today, but stud owner wants to take and progesterone test today (24hour turnaround) for possible side by side AI Wednesday. While I really don't want to miss her, I would feel a little stupid to side by side ai, then have her stand the next day.

This is her first breeding, she is 3.5, she typically has a short cycle, 17 days, in the spring and it is almost four weeks in the fall, and she was about a month late coming in this fall. She is sired by my old dog, and her mom stood around day 15-16.....

I have talked to an experienced in the field of breeding, and I tend to agree to wait, but the stud owner says his male tends to basically ignore the female till she is ready and he has never had the stud try for two days and her not stand...... The stud saying its time is the part that has me nervous.

Take her in for a side by side A.I. if you are worried. You can have the vet draw some blood for a progesterone test as well-you will most likely have to wait until next day for results if they have to send it off to a lab. My vet only charges $50 for this type of breeding, usually two visits at least 36 hours apart, so for piece of mind, it's relatively cheap!

Read the first 4 words of this post as many times as needed then do what she says. You wont ever be sorry you did the blood work.

I have had TWO now refuse to stand. Both first-time females. Did side-by-side AI on both. One we missed…the other we are waiting for her to be far enough along to ultrasound.

Some girls never do really stand! Agree you should do the progesterone test, or have them do a side by side AI. Years ago had a bitch that 'kind of' stood consistently on day 14 - not before and not after - it was a one shot deal (produced 3 litters). I have seen bitches breed as late as days 16-18 and take. They are all different but the ability to do progesterone testing makes it much easier on us.

She finally stood late this afternoon, which is all of day sixteen (Tuesday morning first spot Wednesday evening first stand) We had done progesterone test but did not have results back yet, stud owner let them out to take to vet to get results and possible AI, called the vet and said not to worry. Would have had a hard time getting in the truck in that position.......

Next time, don't give her a chance to run around. It's harder to hit a moving target. I sit in a chair, with a collar on the female..... I hold their heads so they can't bite my stud dog, and then I stay out of the way of the male.

She is standing fine now..... She was just not ready. Must just have an extended cycle in the fall..... A friend says he has noticed bigger litters from longer heat cycles.... We will see!

Progesterone test said she should have ovulated late tues or early Wednesday, she started standing Wednesday afternoon.... Should be golden, or at least yellow.
