    Default New Hunt Test Title???

With all the threads about This-vs-That and, what titles mean what, is it competitive or not? I thought I'd bring this up.

It seems that the AKC has issued a new Master title: "Master Hunter Lifetime Achievement Title" Or MHxx ie.MH12 = 12 passes MH15= 15 passes etc.etc.

    So Hunt Tests aren't competitive??
May you pin all the marks and line the blinds!!

You can make anything competitive, but I don't care how many passes your dog gets, only what my dog gets. When my dog and I meet the required standard, we get a pass, regardless of what your dog does on the same test. So for me it is not competitive.

I think most people define "competitive" as an event that has placements (first, second, third). This would include field trials and obedience events.

I think that this is an "end of career" certificate for a dog/handler Team. Not too many people would drop an extra twenty every time your dog passes a master test. Purely optional.

That's the way I understood the AKC announcement. It is an opportunity for the owner of an MH to obtain a certificate and to place an addition to the MH title for their dog as an end of career-type statement. The minimum MH passes is 12 so that suffix would be MH12.

It is a way also for owners who are proud of their achievements to do a bit of bragging (MH30, MH50 etc). I see nothing wrong with that. I know a few dogs who passed 50 masters in their lifetime. It is quite an achievement. If I had such a dog, I would gladly pay AKC $20 to get a certificate whether it was 30 passes or 50 passes or anything in between.

The AKC has done this with Spaniel (Upland) tests as well. They now have a MHA title which stands for Master Hunter Advanced. To earn this, a dog must first have a MH and then pass 5 additional Master tests with an average score of 8 (score of 7 is all that is required to pass a normal test). It is up to the handler to have the hunt test secretary verify that the dog passed and his score averaged 8 or better. The secretary signs for that test and once the handler and dog have accumulated 5, the owner can send the form (with $20) to AKC and receive a MHA title certificate.
BTW, the AKC now allows Lab's, Golden's, Flat Coat's, Curly Coat's, Irish Water Spaniel's, and Airdale's to run in Spaniel (Upland) hunt tests and earn titles. Any non- Spaniel that titles receives the title of JHU, SHU, or MHU (the "U" is for Upland, just like the non-retrievers that title in Retriever tests titles are JHR, SHR, and MHR). AKC titles require a PhD now in order to know who has what.

I think they will have a number of repeat customers. Folks will get it updated before they breed, etc. Good bucks for AKC, doesn't hurt anyone, so if it makes folks happy to have it, fine by me, but I can't see doing it.

Sounds like the AKC version of "500 Points".

Was my first thought also, I feel that an MH or HRCH once achieved says enough about the dog. The pursuit of the points or the number of passes after the title is achieved is just a continuation of keeping the dog on top of its game IMO. If the owner can afford it more power to them. Beneficial to owners and the clubs hosting the events. Only problem might be is the fact that there are already so many entries for MH level dogs. May create more of problem than already exists.

I like the HRC point system and the extended AKC titles. If others are like me, I like to run tests. After a HRCH or MH, there is no where to go, so the points give me something to keep me from feeling like I'm just sinking money into the test.
