    Jim -

Almost said Ray Staudinger ... pic is fuzzy .. are you sure it's Vance?

Vance got Jay started ... they trained together after Jay left L.I.
and went to work for Henry Sears in Maryland. Look up Theodore
Roosevelt III and Colin Lofting's wonderful article in the December 7,
1959 Sports Illustrated article - "A Rough Ride with Retrievers".

Staudinger trained for Bill Laughlin, Vance trained for Mrs. Lewis
among others. Some of Mrs. Lewis's dogs - FC Paha Sapa Belle,
Beautywoods Tingler (Doc Evans), FC Roy's Rowdy, Krooked
    Kreek Knight.
(National Retriever F.T. Club '61-'66 Supplement).

And, I've got the "The Professor" tied to the wrong Pro ..
Ray Staudinger had that 'monicker', not
Vance ... but both were classic/icons of eastern Pros.

Besides being one of a few Amateurs to win the National Open, W.D. is one of a handful of amatuer trainers to successfully title both a Golden and Lab ...here is a picture of NFC Royal Moose's Moe and FC AFC Ripp N Ready
