One of many results of an educational system that ignores history, or tries to "re-write" it according to an "agenda", is that it can bite you in the behind when their significance is overlooked.
I never realized the following nuance:
Imagine if No Korea or Iran scheduled a nuclear test for Dec. 7 or Sept 11? Except if they did that it would probably be with full knowledge of the significance of the dates.September 17, 2009, the date when the Obama administration scrapped plans for a missile shield based in Poland (supported by a radar installation in the Czech Republic). Some sort of alternative system will eventually be put in place, but the initial decision (and, doubtless, subsequent hesitation) was seen in the region as a statement of weakness in the face of Russian pressure. The fact that it was announced on the seventieth anniversary of the USSRís 1939 invasion of Poland ó a date well-remembered in a part of the world that knows its history ó only added a perception of American ignorance to American weakness.
