I mostly train alone. Plateaued out until I got 2 Gunners Up Son-of-a-gun wingers (S.O.G.'s fit in the jeep) with Dogtra electronics and (recently) found a place to use them regularly. Gage didn't show a lot of confidence in his memory for multiple marks until I started using them. Two work well because I hide cold blinds to run between marks so he gets two or three retrieves before being sent to the memory mark.

Another important item, which can also be made yourself are some blinds to use as holding blinds for your dog and to use around your wingers.
And if I had to do it over again, which was what the OP wanted to know, I would have bought the stickmen from the get-go instead of horsing around with homemade ones that didn't work as well and were a hassle to setup.

You can do a lot of training alone with just stickmen and bumpers.

a group of hard core, stand in the mud all morning and toss ducks for you, group. that knows more than you.

    and a chunk of rope

now I did not over look this, it is even more important for you and all the other loners. You need the now and again group. it is as, or more important than the best tossers or sticks or ropes.

A reliable supply of live or freshly killed birds. Wingers are great, but I'd rather have hand-thrown birds than bumpers thrown from a winger.
