    Just saw that the OP said "other than birds", so next would be a knowledgable and patient mentor. I had a good mentor long before I had wingers, and if I had to do it over I would still want the mentor before wingers, stickmen, holding blinds, ruff stand, or anything else I routinely use. Horse, then cart...

    It don't happen that way. But that's what I would get if I started all over again.
    As far as material equipment ?..The best tool I've found is a simple rope. Pity some discard it so early ?

    If you wish to shorten the learning curve before investing in equipment locate and befriend a highly successful person in the venue you wish to pursue. Then be a sponge, absorb everything you can, ask questions and be a good pupil.

    Whistle, e-collar, bumpers. Without those, it's hard to train. After that, wheeling stick.

    Do you really want to increase entries at the Junior Hunt Test level? Simply put a limit on entries and everyone will flock to JR and fight over how to get in and what to change to make it fair for all !!!!!

    A friend who has all the equipment and good training grounds. That way all you have to buy is lunch!!!
