Now there is what a Labrador should look like! Briggs...and Rick, too....both are correct and to the standard.

Times have definitely changed. Kind of makes me sick to watch the dog shows now for that very reason. No way should that fat tub of lard on the right even be in the same category of lab.

I just can't believe ANY sporting breed judge would reward the short, stumpy legs of the WKC BOB Lab, it's a travesty. How can a dog with those stumps ever be considered athletic?

Thanks Sharon. Proof's in the pudding there.
I own the book "The official book of the Labrador Retriever" and you can see that the CHs from the 40s-80s look ALOT more like our field dogs than today's show dogs.

Nothing like seeing a good looking, well put together athlete that can perform!!!
We are only as good as those that surround us.

Can't believe it! Briggs was one fine looking dog and that other one , well I WON'T SAY ANY MORE! I hate to say it but we are comparing a Yellow and a Black and you know I'm biased.

Does anyone know changes in the written standard between then and now?

In 1994, the Labrador Retriever Club wrote a new amendment to their breed standard changing the required height of the Lab. It was approved and adopted by the American Kennel Club. A class action lawsuit was filed by six breeders contending that changing the height requirement of the breed standard that had been in effect since 1957 would disqualify many Labradors from the dog show ring. The original height at the withers was 22 - 22 ½ inches for males and 21 - 21 ½ inches for bitches. The 1994 amendment changed the ideal height at the withers to 22 ½ - 24 ½ inches for males and 21 ½ - 23 ½ inches for bitches. Six years after the lawsuit was filed, the court decision came down on the side of the Labrador Retriever Club and the AKC.

Not only was Briggs a very handsome dog, His movement from the side was super.
And both coming and going away was equally super. And to go with it all He was a great
showman with abundance of confidence. I seen him in the ring many times.
