    Default Olympic Medals

Does anyone beside myself think the US medal count was feeble?
Are the athletes chosen to compete becoming complacent once
they are chosen to be on the team? Am I being too critical? Are
there too many other options for athletes in this country? It seems
to me that our population is greater than the 4 other countries
finishing in the top 5, we should have done better.

It's the WINTER Olympics.... I would be more concerned if it was the summer games. I watched some of the last day cross country ski... We can't compete with the world in that. Never have. Our best athletes are playing mainstream sports. Where the money is.

I found it interesting how they were still bunched at 48 km & how the eventual winners were all by themselves at the end -
certainly a test of endurance .

Thank goodness I'm not the only one that felt this way...The Olympics like many of our elected officials need term limits...when our "best" skier is a three time Olympian,it doesnt say much for our sports program, and yes I know it takes funding, but with all the money that networks pay for broadcast rights the money is out there from sponsors

IMO we fielded one of our weaker teams across the board

Some of the sports just aren't popular in the US in general.
Look at where Norway really racked up the medals.
Cross country, Biathlon, nordic combined, ski jumping. In vast parts of the USA cross country skiing is just not something kids do because there is no ongoing winter snowpack to begin with.

X2. Spot on with this take Bill. Winter Olympics have never been a big metal stomping thing for the USA. However, the one discipline I was surprised to see that was so bad was our Speed Skating team. That was a brutal showing.

Marvin, I agree with your comments....like no metal in Hockey? What? They are all our best pro's....against other pro's....level playing field yet we suck!

I was also really bothered when our athletes got really excited by a bronze or silver metal. I know, I know it is the olympics that being second or third in the world is not really that bad, but looking back twenty years ago, you never saw American athletes celebrating for a bronze of silver....I think we have dumped down the American youth to think showing up is good enough. I was in Wrestling and when I took third place, I was not happy and it drove me to work harder to be better....don't see that in our youth today, at least not as much...

I thought the kids from Vermont did very well.
local news kept giving our placements in events and medal counts.
I think Colorado was also high on the list. How did you alls other states do?

NC got a medal for every athlete it sent to the games in Sochie. Of course, that number happens to be ZERO!
