    Default Another new guy

Just wanted to introduce myself, as I'm new to the world of Retriever training. My name is Trey, and I live in Jacksonville, Fl. I have been following the forum since I knew I was getting a pup, but I couldnt post for some reason, so I ended up creating another profile. I have learned a ton already from this site.

I purchased my first duck dog this past January. Being that I got him from Louisiana, I felt Gumbeaux was a fitting name. I am currently using a mix of DVD training programs and books, but being that he is in the final few weeks of the "Let him be a puppy" stage, they all seem to preach the same regarding basic OB and socialization. (In my opinion) he is doing really well with basic commands and retrieves. He is responding well to whistle commands. Water does not seem to be an issue but he does take to it better if he is following me in. I've done minor intro to guns (22 poppers at the training grounds) but he doesn't even acknowledge them.

I am fortunate to have a friend who is a trainer and has somewhat taken me and the pup on as a project. He gives me weekly homework, then we meet up on the weekend so he can belittle me and show me how I need to actually do it. Truth be told he is a major asset to my training.

I guess I need 5 posts prior to using a URL, so I cant post a picture. Just imagine a 17 week old black lab.

I apologize in advance for all of the questions I will probably ask when I could have simply used the search function.

Welcome to the forum. I guess your post helped me go ahead and jump in as well. I have been reading posts for a couple of weeks now just trying to get a feel for the place. I just got a chocolate and she is 8 weeks old. I am very excited! Like you I have a mentor. He has trained several labs. However, he lives about 3.5 hours away so I will only see him about 4 times a year. I think that will work out for the best though. He likes the "Water Dog" method and after reading that book I have decided to go with Smartwork.

Hopefully he will not belittle me for too long.

I'm a few weeks behind you so i look forward to your posts as I am sure i can learn from what you are doing.

    Good Luck

Welcome you guys! Three things I feel that helped me the most: Bill Hillman puppy DVD, meet with a Pro for at least an evaluation and when you get stuck, and join at club for the training days and the hands on help and training partners.

Don't get your hopes up on not being belittled by your mentor. I have been training professionally since 2009 and my mentors still razz me everytime I see them. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your pups.
