Back when you used to see more popper loads in HRC as opposed to the "primer poppers" I saw a demonstration at one of Old South HRC's training days. While everyone watched, someone shot an empty coke can with a popper load from a few feet away - can shredded.

The same care and safety precautions are in order for poppers as for any "real" load. Heck, there have been actors killed by blanks and some of them really were blanks...doesn't always matter.

Being what the price of poppers are these days, buying Thunder Sticks seems to make sense. At about $180 or so they will be paid off in a few trials and a kid cannot kill himself by using one. That's the route we are going....

He couldn't break the action open after the incident. That gun went to Krieghoff for it's repair and new barrel.

Great post, very important for Clubs to ensure proper gun handling techniques. Also, please make sure all gunners wear proper ear protection! I can remember when our club was facing a potential law suit when a young gunner suffered ear damage while shooting primers!

And eye protection. As the safety officer says, "Hats, ears and eyes."

We have moved to Thunder guns as well. Much more cost efficient and safer. Win win..... plus if we run out of gas we can zip over to Home Depot and buy another case of gas

Back a few years ago, when I was just getting started in dog games, one of the judges at my very first HRC test took the opportunity during the pre-test briefing, to show us greenhorns what "just" a popper gun can do. Plastic water jug a few yards away, shot at with popper gun and BOOSH! - voila, shredded plastic water jug.

It was a very effective demonstration and a stark reminder of the damage that "just" a popper can do. Probably worth repeating every now and again.
