Thread: iPad used for judging

  1. #1

    Default iPad used for judging

I have used my iPad for two judging assignments this spring and won't be going back to paper! Spoke with Laura while in south Texas and followed her lead. My observations and lessons learned.....

The battery can be a problem. I got down to 6% the first time I used it and judged last dog on paper! The answer is to put iPad on snooze between dogs and tests. I never got below 50% this past weekend.

The app I used was Noteshelf. Very easy to use. I took it out to a training day to practice. You need to spend some time practicing how to navigate the app.

My iPad is in otterbox case and I judged in rain.....no problems at all.

I judged on sunny day this past weekend. Screen visibility was OK.

    Get a good stylus.

    PROS
EXCELLENT on windy days. This may be its biggest advantage.
    Excellent on raining days.
Easy to use while doing judging activity on line. Calling for birds, taking birds from handler etc.
    Very convenient.

    CONS
Visibility on sunny days. I'm sure this could be improved.
Takes a little getting used to.
If it crashes, hope you have good co-judge

    Conclusion...
I am not tech savvy, in fact my kids would say I'm an idiot about things like this. Having said that, with a little practice it is extremely convenient and easy to use.

Anyone else using iPad or notebook to judge?

I would be willing to try, but want to watch someone do it first. I find the 'pad hard to see in the sun.

Some (not me) might say that you have a hard time seeing dogs in the sun. 

That is why I always give 'em the benefit of the doubt, and am so beloved. Now, go sell chicken to folks with EBT cards, bubba!

I have never crashed an iPad. One think I like about a ring binder is the ability to pull out pages of dropped dogs, and the ability to lay sheets of the top dogs side-by-side for comparison.

You just need to bring a printer for the end of the day

One thing that I would like is if you knew what piece of water you were going to be using is to have a google overlay of the water , I am no good at drawing water every page looks different

Don't draw the water... Draw the land around it

Oh oh, now I'm going to have to start researching some new toys and experimenting with apps!
