I am looking for some assitance in finding out how the AKC Hunt Test Program was established, to include details such as its intent, audience, founding year, etc. I have reviewed what is on the AKC website, just wondering if there is anything that goes beyond that as their information doesn't really answer my questions.
While you are waiting, do some searching on this site. Or, perhaps even better, search the site via google. There have been some great posts on this subject as well as some folks putting up some historical documents that relate to your search.

Chris, I am sure glad you posted this. Thank you. This really brought back thousands of memories. Got to meet Richard a few times a long with some very very nice people. Tiltled my first Master Hunting Retriever, which I actually learned a lot of from Richards book. I also remember they use to do a quarter & flush part of the test that I really liked. Lord, reading some of these materials really takes you back. I really enjoyed those hunt test. Thanks alot Chris for the 80's flashback
Don't believe everything Arnett wrote... but it is funny.
I had some correspondence with A. Hamilton Rowen in January 1985, but it wasn't entirely polite. If you have a bottle of Lagavulin, I might re-create it ;-).
The first hunt tests started in 1984 BC. You have to check that on the stone-chisled internet. NAHRA and HRC started something in 1983 AD and AKC joined in. But to my mind it has all evolved away from a hunter and her/his retriever.
AKC published the "Hunting Test Herald" when they first got into the Hunting Test Game. They explained the how, what's and why's. If you can get any copies, they would be very enlightening.
Here is a link from AKC giving some history of AKC hunt tests. It mentions starting with NAHRA and then later going their "separate ways" with the first AKC Hunt Tests in 1985
James Spencer has written extensively about the history of Hunt Tests. And he tells the stories in such an engaging manner. A complete pleasure to read. I just bought ALL of his books because they are so wonderful to read!
I have two copies of the old AKC Hunting Test Herald that John mentioned AND I have 4 old copies of the Hunt Test News that came about when the AKC Hunt Test Herald bellied up (from what I understand). They need a good home!!
PM me
Hmmm, that history might not be correct cause I talked with a master judge a month or so ago who told me he started in 1961......... Of course he is older than me and I taught Moses when he was a corporal but that shouldn't change the story. BSEG!
Omar has a hysterical letter he showed me at the HRC National a few years ago to him from the AKC saying "There is no market or interest for a non-field trial retriever event. If there were, we would be doing it." Oh how the AKC changed its tune quickly.
Apparently you can teach an old dog something new if there is a reward !
