    Default Canada may criminalize e-collars

    Hello folks,

For those who don't know, I wanted to pass along this information so you can be aware that the Canadian government is working on a bill to amend the criminal code that will criminalize the use of e-collars. It was introduced on June 12 in the House of Commons. You can follow the link below and scroll down to the section where Mr. Kennedy Stewart speaks.

Link in original thread seems to give an error message. This is the link that came via PM from your note.

    Let's see if it works...

Below is a screen shot of the section that seemed to be of importance.

Knew Quebec had already taken this step and figured a national law would be next. Would be interesting to see how they define "companion animals." Even with a working dog cutout, I'm sure associated importation laws could be a real issue.

Things like this should make everyone stop to think that the real enemy is not pros v ams or limited HT entries. We should be do everything to promote the sport so that when the enviable happens, we are one substantial part of a lobby powerful enough to defeat it.

Well it just shows we don't have a monopoly on ill-informed politicians. I wonder if they will outlaw the bit used in the horses mouth?

Gary, the Quebec law went a step further and banned prong collars if I'm not mistaken.

This is scary. We'd be fools to think it can't happen here.

    Hi,

Here in Québec province, we have major problem of puppy mills and Gov. decided to put in place a law to eliminate those, and animal cruelty was one of the reason.
The positive ''cookie trainer'' lobby is extremely strong and supported by the vet. and when that law came unfortunately none of us were @ the table while some of those trainer positive trainer were and were able to include E.C., pinch collar and wanted to include chocker witch was refuse into the law.
Of course those + trainers never explain how great this tool is and .......... not only they don't want to but they don't even understand it and wanted to understand in it.
It was like a shock when this law came in the hunting dog training world here......we put in place a great committee, lawyer, garmin ......build great documents to explain what we do, what is electrostimulation and .......
We mobilize our hunting and fishing federation into it and needed there support.
The committee was able to sit down once again to explain the reason of E.C. explain what it does, explain the reason, explain OF COURSE what was NEVER explain by the + training lobby.
We were able have amended the law, but the battle is not won......i fell it just began!

We took a lesson on this.....we were not much involved into it and now we pay the price. This is something we will not do again.
Our strategy is to be on top of it.

Please excuse my poor english but it give you the big picture, not in detail because to hard for me to explain in english of what happened and what is happening here!

I didn't know that Canadian Criminal law till Chris gave me a call to raise the flag and i thank you guys and specially Newf, with in minutes calls already made.

It is important to note that this bill does not involve the current Canadian Government. It is a private members bill in early stages proposed by a Mr. Kennedy Stewart (Burnaby—Douglas, NDP). The NDP party is Canada's socialist party and is currently our official opposition. They do not have enough control of the parliament, even with the support of other left parties to pass this bill into law.

It does not appear this bill will gain any traction with the current majority conservative government and will likely die.

I would encourage Canadians to contact their MP to voice their opposition to this silliness. If the feel good crowd decides to get behind this in large numbers - I could see the Conservative government jumping on the bandwagon as well.

Thanks Chris and the other fellow for alerting me and the others. I have written to my Member and the Prime Minister!!!! I have put a copy on the Cdn Hunting Dog forum. Best leave nothing to chance! even if it is the Socialist party! You just never know! The uneducated are the worst for stirring the pot incorrectly. They are ill informed making things difficult to say the least. IMHO It is too bad.
