    Default Swollen Eye

Well, I just came home from work and found that my dogs eye is severely swollen. Looks like maybe she got stung by something. If it has not gone down by the morning I'm going to take her to the vet. Her eye was fine when I left this morning and when I got home it looks like this. I gave her a couple Benadryl and hopefully it will go away by morning. Any ideas what this could be?

Yikes. I'd be concerned it was a grass awn. If this is a possibility best to go to or call an emergency vet to get their advice.

I would wait for the benedryl to kick in, but if the swelling doesn't go down I'd be on my the phone with the vet.

Mine got bit by something once during training, her eye was swelled shut during a water retriever, but by the time I got home it was hardly noticeable.

Anybody been spraying weeds in your yard? I learned the hard way, swole up both eyes on my puppy. Went down is a couple hours with a good flushing.

Not that I'm aware of. It wasn't a grass awn. I don't have any in my yard. I was thinking maybe a wasp or bee sting. Like I said, if it's not down by the morning, we're going to the vet. It's not getting any worse though

Probably wouldn't hurt to hold a cold compress on it.
Bag of frozen peas or corn work well.

Keep a close eye on it...no pun intended.

I had a dog that started with one eye swelling, then the second eyed started and within a few hours her whole face was puffed out and my pretty little field golden looked like a sharpei and I'm not kidding. I had given benadryl upon seeing the first eye swelling but the benadryl wasn't helping. I had to get her to the Vet and on some type of antihistamine intravenously. Clearly an allergic reaction to something that either bit her or something topical she got into. Never knew what caused it.

I also saw a dog on the weekend that kept getting bitten by deer flies and his eyes were swelling up pretty good.

If you see the swelling spread don't wait until the morning.

Doesn't really look like it, but roll up her eye lids and check for seeds. My brother's dog looked like his eye was going to come out of his head (he has bulgey eyes any way) and they we're read and swollen. You could see the third eyelid also. Vet cleaned them out and showed him how to do it.

    Go ahead and wait.

Your dog doesn't really need to see.

Swelling hasn't spread. Actually looks like it has gone down some. I pulled the lid back and doesn't look like there is anything wrong. Takeing her to the vet first thing in the morning to have it checked out though just to be safe. Going to put a cold wrap on it to see if the swelling will go down some too. Hadn't thought of that. Thanks for that advice
